SGMY’s Review Of Violet Oon
I recently dined at Violet Oon, a beloved spot in Singapore known for its authentic Peranakan cuisine. The variety on the menu is impressive, and I couldn’t wait to try some of their signature dishes.
I started with the Gado Gado, which was a delightful mix of tempeh, fried bean curd, and vegetables topped with a creamy peanut sauce. The flavors were rich and satisfying. Next, I tried the Ngoh Hiang, which were deep-fried rolls of prawn, crab meat, and chicken. The rolls were crispy and the filling was flavorful, making it a perfect appetizer.
For the main course, I went with the Beef Rendang. The beef was tender and the sauce was a wonderful blend of spices and coconut cream. It’s easily one of the best rendangs I’ve tasted. I also tasted the Dry Laksa, which featured fresh rice noodles tossed in a fragrant laksa gravy. The prawns were juicy and the dish had the right amount of spice.
One of the standout dishes was the Udang Goreng Chilli. The prawns were tossed in a spicy chili rempah that was both fragrant and delicious. For dessert, I had the Sugee Cake, a rich and moist cake with a hint of brandy. It was a perfect end to the meal.
However, I was slightly disappointed with the Fish Tempra. The sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking and overpowered the delicate flavor of the sea bass. Despite this, my overall experience at Violet Oon was fantastic. The rich flavors and variety of dishes make it a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Peranakan cuisine. I’ll definitely be back to try more from their extensive menu.
